Fantastic is FANTASTIC!! April 11, 2008 I had a friend whose aunt worked for a record distributor. She needed some pre-teens to rate a new album the company was thinking of bringing to the U.S.. You guessed it...Fantastic by a group called WHAM. My pre-teen little heart skipped a beat the minute I saw George Michael. It was true love once I heard the album. Fun, upbeat, great to dance to and the ballad "nothing looks the same in the light", how great is that? It was a fave back then and still a fave today.
An under-rated debut thats shows promise. December 17, 2007 In the USA, Wham isnt as highly appreciated as it was and is in the UK. Wham's debut album is widly unheard of, and unknown, i believe. What was a smash hit album across the pond, was only minorly appreciated over here i think.
I only knew Wham for its "Go Go" song, like most people; but my growing appreciation of George Michael's work helped me look into his past music, hence discovering 'FANTASTIC'. Delving into Wham! was worth it, becouse i found some gems in their music, and this album surly shines. Believe it or not.
This is a fun, inspired album. From influences ranging from Funk music, disco, old school rap, and r&b. All forming to make one unique pop record. It really defys genres and i think the title of the album suits it well.
Songs like 'Bad Boys', 'Ray Of Sunshine' 'Come On' and 'Young Guns' are the funk-ish songs for the most part.
"Ray Of Sunshine" definatly shines out of them all the think as something that could of potentially contended with tracks found on Michael Jackson's "Thriller" album. Its that good i think.
The cover song on the cd, of 'The Miracles' "LOVE MACHINE", is quality immitation, sounding pretty good in its own right. Casual listeners of the original might mistake Wham's version for the real thing. I like it more than the original ,becouse i allways thought the song was corny and embarrassing...but its grown on me, and its not becouse it was a crappy song, its becouse my own personal taste tword that style at the time. Ive come to accept it though through Wham's rendition, which is true to the original, if you listen to both i think.
The "Wham Rap" is very old school, fusing that old fun rap style with a dash of the BeeGee's...if thats possiable. Well, they proved it was, becouse it exists on fantastic, and its a pretty enjoyable fun song...just stretches on too long. (And if you ever see the song's music video, the lyrics are totally different...well...mostly)
"Club Tropicana" takes us all to some party on island. A decent song that sets the mood for sipping fruity adult beverage's and scoping out hot girls in bikini's. This shows more of that diversity in the album. Something i didnt expect at all. But fun.
Now, the most stand out track i found on this album and the most unexpectedly good song has to go to...
"Nothing Looks The Same"; which really spoke to me. I think i can say, that THATS my song. A sexy slow jam. Honest lyrics that hit close to home. Disclosing what a farce sexual excapades are when the morning comes, and reality kicks in. This shows for Wham i think and most of , George Michael. One of his best, underated, over-looked songs ever. And thats what finally makes his album a secret treasure, so to speak. It pays sometimes to look deeper into some music, becouse youre rewarded with some fine things now and then that are special.
You might of heard that this album is fun, and that is true, but it also has a softer, deeper, more reflective side, that will be later explored in later work by the musicians.
You can get a awesome bargain on this cd since most people in the USA dont know or care for it, and that works tword my favor.
Worth owning, to me.
A good effort by Wham! that many people have no idea exists. I think i like this album more than the other Wham albums.
Great Pop, Great Music December 3, 2006 This album is filled with fun pop music that anybody would like. The album starts out with two great songs with great horn riffs "Bad Boys" and "Ray of Sunshine". Those two songs are dynamite. They got fun, catchy hooks, and like I said, great energy driven by the horns. The rest of the album is also pretty good. But the first two songs are what make this album what it is. No doubt. "Club Tropicana" is another nice track on here, along with the other 5 songs that make up this mini 8-track album. If you like fun, creative, and quality pop music, buy this album.
Not exactly fantastic, but a lot of fun August 16, 2005 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Sometimes good intentions can make a recording play better than it should. There is some amazingly schlocky material on this recording, the debut outing from Wham. However, both George and Andrew sound incredibly inspired, and their enthusiasm easily rubs off on the listener. For their first record, the boys try to pass them off as leather-clad tough guys on "Bad Boys" (#60 US, #2 UK), "Young Guns" (#3 UK), and the "Wham Rap" (#8 UK). Obviously, all of this bad boy posturing isn't believable for second, however, both guys dive into even the most ridiculous material with utter conviction (just listen to Michael tackle the chorus of "Wham Rap"), and that's what makes it all entertaining.
There are at least a couple of tracks that work on a straight level, however, most notably the jazzy pop of "Club Tropicana" (#4 UK) and the underrated ballad "Nothing Looks the Same in the Light," in which Michael's understated sincerity is genuinely poignant. The other tracks ("A Ray of Sunshine," "Come On") sound like rough versions of the irresistible pop that would make up the majority of MAKE IT BIG, which would become the duo's breakthrough album in the US. While the style had not yet been perfected here, once again, George and Andrew throw themselves into it completely, as they also do on the above-average cover of Moore and Giffin's "Love Machine."
Though it hit #1 in the UK, this album didn't make much impact in the US, only peaking at #83 on the Hot 200. While FANTASTIC has it's fair share of generic-eighties pop, and more than a few portions that now sound outrageously dated, it's the apparent delight that George and Andrew had making it that really makes an enduring listen today. And it's also worth picking up for the aforementioned "Nothing Looks the Same in the Light," the most underrated ballad in Michael's cannon.
Not for the bandwagon fans August 8, 2005 5 out of 7 found this review helpful
I'm the president of the eastern nebraska Wham fans club (or pumpf as we call ourselves)and I'm so sick of people walking up to me on the streets of Omaha and going, "Make it Big is the best debut album evah!!". Everytime I hear that I just cringe because they obviously aren't old school wham fans. Yeah anyone can quote every lyric from Make it Big and do the "Wake me up before you go-go" dance, who can't? But can these posers bust out the wham rap for a dollar or Young guns(go for It)? This is what separates the casual bandwagon wham fan from hard core types like me that go to work in a white sweatshirt that says go-go on it with flourescent pink shorts and a gold earring. For some reason people think I like dudes, but I don't. I just like to emulate the greatest singer of the greatest band of the greatest decade since I've been born. Wham stood for fun unlike the Sex Pistols(who they are often compared to). George Michael smiled with teeth so white that you couldn't take your cat to their show without it being blinded(It happened to my friend Damunil). This album is just what the title states, really good. So throw it on for your next party and if someone wants to take it off and put on Make it big, make them eat their own poop.
