Editorial Reviews:

Album Description
Special Edition two disc (CD + PAL DVD) pressing of the 2005 album from this Swedish brother/sister duo including a bonus DVD featuring videos and other multimedia fun. The Knife have an appetite for bright, quirky electro-pop and unabashed emotions. The result is Deep Cuts, a colorful album that makes up for an absence in subtlety with an immediacy that should surely reap some commercial rewards. The formula pays dividends on 'Heartbeats' where Karin's vocals are exuberant whilst Olof's synths are brimming with the echo of late 80's disco pop. Brille. 2006. **Please note that you will need an All Region Code player to view the DVD.

5 out of 5 stars electro-awesome.   November 12, 2008
The Knife are awesome.
Deep Cuts is an amazing album.
Its kind of an acquired taste ... but gets better with every listen!
Full of irony - I love what they stand for as a band.

I highly recommend it!
"You Make Me Like Charity" became one of my favorite songs.

The only criticism I have are of the remixes at the end ... but I'm not a fan of remixes in general.

2 out of 5 stars Not worth the whole album   June 7, 2008

The Knife are great, I love them. But there are really only 4 good songs on this particular album (Heartbeats, You Take My Breath Away to name two). Quite disappointing. You're better off buying a few of the individual MP3 songs for a buck each. The rest of the songs are just "fillers". Deep Cuts is not as good as a whole as their other albums. So, save a few bucks!

3 out of 5 stars Doesn't cut so deep   February 13, 2008

Considering that they're a European electro-pop duo, the Knife are better than they really have any right to be. That's not to say they're that great, though (at least not at this time). Sure, they find strong individual moments like the deliriously catchy single, "Heartbeats," the almost-as-punchy "One For You," and the low-key swirl of "She's Having a Baby," but the album suffers from nearly as many downspots ("Got 2 Let U" or "The Cop," anyone?). It wouldn't be for another couple of years before they managed to fill out an album with more than just a handful of solid tunes.

"Rock Classics" goes from tuneful and intriguing to overlong and finally excruciating; the vocals on "You Make Me Like Charity" are creepy, and not in a good way; "Hangin' Out" is an utterly useless throwaway. Many of the track names reek of bad 80s reminders, and even if this exists in a newer era, the frequently plastic texture makes one think of that superficial decade as well. Since the genre as a whole is defined by individual tracks, it's easy to see why they struggled to craft a long player worthy of acclaim, making the upcoming "Silent Shout" that much more of a miracle. Expect to snatch away the best bits on "Deep Cuts" and circulate them on a mix disc or iPod, but don't count on spinning the whole album more than a few times ever.

Best cuts: "Heartbeats," "One For You," "She's Having a Baby," "Behind the Bushes," "You Take My Breath Away," "Is It Medicine"

2 out of 5 stars dull edge   February 11, 2008
I loved two songs on this CD and pretty much can't stand the rest. Maybe its an acquired taste. I wish I would have gotten this CD free from a friend, then I wouldn't feel so salty about forking over my cash for something that's not so hot. BEWARE!

4 out of 5 stars Deep Cuts   June 5, 2007
Deep Cuts~ The Knife is a great album filled with well-produced electronic music. They sound like a mix of early 80's minimal synth-music like early human league and mix this up with sounding like Goldfrapp and other more modern synth bands. The lyrics are ok but one will never confuse the knife with great lyricists such as Martin Gore or Marian Gold. I love the sounds and they seem to have been picked by hand since every sound is just right for the track. The cover-art ( if you now can call it art, I have my doubts) is terrible and looks like a failed high-school project. The photo is terrible and the font is way to small and some of the colors make it even harder to read. Even so this is a great album and it definetely deserves its 4 stars. I highly recommend this album.
